The Exceptional Care for Children (ECC) Bridge Unit Addition represents a transformative investment in Delaware’s healthcare community and a significant step forward in specialized transitional care. Located on ECC’s Newark campus, the three-story, 38,556-square-foot addition expands the facility’s licensed capacity by 47%, increasing from 43 to 68 beds while growing the campus footprint by more than 50%. The project was thoughtfully designed to support teenagers and young adults with complex medical conditions as they transition from pediatric to adult care, addressing a critical gap in services throughout the region.

The addition includes 23 patient rooms, expanded nursing and clinical spaces, classrooms, activity areas, family gathering spaces, and a therapeutic rooftop garden. The project was designed with dignity, independence, comfort, and well-being in mind, creating an environment that supports exceptional healthcare and an enhanced quality of life. As the first facility of its kind in Delaware and one of only a few in the nation, the Bridge Unit serves as a model for the future of transitional healthcare.

Ribbon-Cutting Celebration

On June 12, 2026, Bancroft Construction joined ECC leadership, healthcare professionals, elected officials, community partners, and nearly 150 guests to celebrate the grand opening of the Bridge Unit Addition. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the culmination of years of planning, collaboration, and dedication to improving care options for Delaware’s most medically vulnerable young adults. Distinguished speakers included U.S. Senator Chris Coons, Delaware State Senator Nicole Poore, and ECC leadership, all recognizing the project’s impact on the state’s healthcare landscape and the lives of the families it will serve. The event highlighted not only the successful completion of a complex healthcare facility, but also the power of partnerships among ECC, ABHA Architects, Bancroft Construction, healthcare advocates, and community stakeholders who shared a common vision: creating opportunities for young adults with complex medical needs to thrive.

Awards & Recognition

The project has already received significant industry recognition and continues to be featured in regional construction award programs. Most notably, the project was submitted for the 2026 Delaware Contractors Association Excellence in Construction Awards in the General Building category and has also been identified for ABC Delaware Excellence in Construction consideration.
