North Star Elementary School in Hockessin,
Delaware was the first new elementary school built in northern New Castle County in 10 years. One of the primary goals of the design was to incorporate the building into the existing landscape. Therefore, each classroom provides a view of the tree-lined property and allows for a large amount of natural light.
The school houses 650 students in grades Kindergarten through fifth. A four classroom pod supports each grade level, and the full-day Kindergarten classes are supported in a special addition to the building. Common areas are also included within each pod. A state-of-the-art library, full-service kitchen, computer lab and multi-functional gym are all features of the 58,000 square foot facility.
North Star Elementary School was completed on a very aggressive schedule, with less than one year between the school’s groundbreaking and Certificate of Occupancy. Bancroft completed the project on time, during the height of a very busy school construction market where resources were sometimes limited. The Project Team maintained a strong focus to finish on schedule, wrapping construction with a satisfied Owner and end-users.
